Unattended Child Policy
Adopted 11/9/23
The Chilton/Clanton Public Library welcomes children to use it facilities and services. However, responsibility for a child’s safety and behavior rests with the parents, legal guardian or assigned chaperone, and not with the library staff.
In light of book challenges nationwide, the Chilton Clanton Public Library and the Library Board is taking steps to update our unattended minor policy. Beginning November 9, 2023, children 15 and under will need to be supervised by a parent, guardian, or responsible caregiver (who is 18+) This decision puts the responsibility for access to materials in the hands of those who know children best.
If a parent/guardian has not picked up an unattended child (under age 18) before closing time, the police will be called upon to take responsibility for the child. The library will not remain open past the normal closing time for unattended children. A library employee will not, under any circumstances, put a child into their personal vehicle.
With the update, children who are 15 years old and younger must be accompanied and directly supervised at all times by a parent, guardian, or any other responsible caregiver (who is 18+).
Respectfully the Chilton Clanton Public Library Director
